When You Should Change Your Mattress and Why

When You Should Change Your Mattress and Why

With the average person spending 26 years sleeping totalling 9490 days, it only makes sense we give you an insight into how often you should be changing your mattress to be getting the best night’s sleep possible.

The Sleep Foundation generally recommend that you should replace your mattress when it’s 6–8 years old. Their top tip for getting a better night’s sleep is investing in a better mattress and bedding. Having the best mattress for your needs and preferences is vital to making sure that you are comfortable enough to relax.

We felt that it was important to let you know to consider this for your mattress. You may not realise it, but we spend one-third of our lives asleep, and our mattresses are subject to a staggering 20,000 hours of wear and tear over a 7-year lifespan, so it’s really important to ensure you are getting the support needed for a good, healthy night’s sleep.

When’s the right time for a new mattress?

You can’t beat a good night’s sleep – it leaves you feeling fit, rested and happy!

The foundation of good sleep is a comfortable bed and the right mattress. It can be the difference between a restorative night’s sleep and a poor-quality sleep that results in tiredness and fatigue.

Research shows that sleeping on an uncomfortable bed could restrict and interrupt your quality of sleep – yet the deterioration may be so gradual and invisible that many people fail to make the connection between an uncomfortable bed and poor sleep.

You may need a new mattress if…

Mattresses don’t last forever; even if it looks okay, it may not be giving you the support or comfort that you need for a good night’s sleep.

A mattress’s lifespan is affected by several factors such as the quality, care and amount you use it (e.g. reading, watching TV & sleeping each night versus occasional use of a spare bed).

Changes in lifestyle (marriage, new home) and in our bodies (losing or gaining weight, ageing, etc.) can also necessitate a change of mattress.

Here are a few tips when choosing your next mattress…

Finding the right mattress is essential for a good night’s sleep, but with so many options, it can feel overwhelming. Here’s a quick guide to help you choose the perfect mattress for your needs.

1. Understand Your Sleeping Position

  • Side Sleepers: A softer mattress helps cushion the shoulders and hips, which can reduce pressure points.
  • Back Sleepers: Look for medium-firm support to keep your spine aligned without causing too much pressure on your back.
  • Stomach Sleepers: A firmer mattress prevents your hips from sinking in, which can cause lower back pain.

2. Know the Mattress Types

  • Memory Foam: Ideal for those who want contouring support. It adapts to your body shape but can trap heat, so opt for a cooling gel layer if you sleep hot.
  • Innerspring: Offers good bounce and support, and is usually cooler because of better air circulation.
  • Hybrid: Combines memory foam and innerspring benefits, giving you both support and contouring. Great for couples with different sleep preferences.
  • Latex: Natural, durable, and responsive. It offers support similar to memory foam but sleeps cooler and is eco-friendly.

3. Consider Firmness

  • Mattress firmness is often a matter of personal preference, but it’s important to find a balance between comfort and support. A mattress that’s too soft might cause discomfort over time, while one that’s too firm can lead to pressure build-up.
